I came to work, but did not read
I was hired by an office supplies store in a large town while pursuing my degree. The manager showed me around the store and introduced me my new colleagues. Every time she introduced someone to me, she would also tell them that they had done something wrong. It may have been true, but it was a red flag to me.
She sent me upstairs and told me to read the values of the company (a 50-70 page document). As I continued to read, I became more convinced that this was not worth the time and energy I had invested. After an hour, I told them not to bother paying me. She asked me what happened upstairs, and I told her that I didn’t think I was a good match for the position.
A month later I got my first librarian position. It’s one of my best decisions to date. She was surprised that I was back so soon but was supportive. Mother was proud, father was worried.
