Workplace horror stories told by disgruntled employees

He let his guard down

I used to be a cabinetry worker at a place with a large industrial saw called ‘beam saw.’ It works by placing material (in this case sheets of MDF or particleboard) on rollers, and then the machine clamps both ends as it draws the piece into the machine. The guard is then lowered and a large knife makes the cuts according to a programme.

One time, the operator placed a piece on the table, pressed start and the machine began pulling the board back in. He noticed at the last minute that the piece was not “square” so he tried to push it quickly. Big mistake. The metal guard fell and caught his hand. The blade then cut off four fingers, as the program began.
