Just Not Right
I worked at a manufacturing plant for a placement company. I had already worked seven hours out of my eight-hour workday when a supervisor came to see me and asked if anyone wanted to stay another four hours. All of us politely declined. We politely declined. They asked again a few minutes later.
They came back to us and said that if we didn’t stay for the entire 4-hour shift, then ALL of us would be written up. We were all angry, but we didn’t know who to speak to because we weren’t employees. The supervisor was told by some of the crew that they couldn’t come because they had to pick up kids.
After the supervisor left the crew, several people said they could not be written up again because they would lose their jobs. I was going to a dinner at my in-laws, so I told the husband about the situation. I also said that I would be staying. Tell the crew that I will stay, and don’t worry. I told the supervisor and was put on a different crew.
I was only required to work 1 hour, but had to stay the entire 4 hours. But it wasn’t over… The next day I called and explained what had happened. The company said that they had a rep on site due to the fact that this manufacturer was such a big client. I called the representative on-site and explained the problem. I was told that they have many attendance problems.
I again explained that I had never been late to work and I was told everyone in my crew would be written up if they did not stay 4 hours after their scheduled shift. The representative on site defended the supervisor’s actions and was rude to me. Fine, I don’t need you–I quit. This is how I found out about my rights as a worker and workplace harassment.
