Cast Iron Catastrophe
In this restaurant, we served seafood on wooden boards on top of cast iron skillets. It is not necessary to mention that they were heavy. I was a seasoned server, and could carry the huge trays with no problem. One day, I had six seafood platters ordered by my table. So, I placed them all on a large tray and carried it over my shoulder.
It was a lot of weight for me at the time. I was only 5’5″ and 100 lbs. I was able to get the tray and tray stand over my shoulder, but still managed to reach the table. When I tried to place the tray on the tray stand, I fell over. The fact that I dropped the six cast-iron skillets was bad enough, but when I looked at where they were, I saw I had dropped them right on top of a three-year old child, knocking him from his seat.
He was lucky not to be injured. Instead, he was covered in a thick layer of sauce, fries and fried seafood. He screamed. I screamed. And the parents also screamed. It was chaos. They got a free gift card and a meal. It was a no-tip situation for me. I wasn’t mad at all. I’m glad I didn’t kill that poor child.
