Workplace horror stories told by disgruntled employees

The Dressing Room Vandal

In the ’90s I worked in a JC Penney Catalog Outlet. The catalog sold wedding gowns, and the ones that weren’t selling were sent to the outlet. The fitting rooms were usually staffed by females, since you could only enter the other gender’s fitting room when it was vacant. It was only natural to have women staff the fitting rooms, since men tried on less clothing than women.

Remember that this was in the 1990s. People were unaware of issues such as gender identity or LGBTQ. The staff was informed by a gentleman that he, his partner, were planning a wedding ceremony and that the man wanted to wear a bridal gown. He told the staff he was a woman and asked to use the dressing room for women.

We were unable comply due to time constraints and store regulations. He was offered the male fitting room. We were not able to monitor the customer because he took six dresses and tried them on in the male fitting rooms. We called security after three hours. He said that he had almost finished.

He said that none of the dresses were his style when he came out. He left the dresses in the dressing area for someone to pick up. She was mortified when she entered. Every. Single. One. Was. Soiled.
