Being Nice Pays Off
We were flying back to Manchester from New York and our connecting flight was experiencing mechanical problems. We had to wait for the next morning’s flight because it was the last one out on that particular day. The flight attendants instructed us to find a hotel by going to the gate agent. When we arrive at the stand , two men in their mid-twenties are screaming at the agent.
They are red faced and stomping, while shouting about an important meeting that will take place the next morning. The gate agent calmly gave them vouchers and new tickets for a nearby hotel. Then they started complaining about the hotel’s quality and demanded that it be upgraded. The agent tried to speak to them but was constantly interrupted.
The men finally left the terminal and continued to shout as they left. My son and I were very polite when we approached the gate agent. She helped us with our hotel booking and rebooking of flight. She also gave us each $400 in vouchers for flights. As we were walking away, she also gave us flight vouchers for both men. She was giving them free flights all the time she interrupted them, but they were too mad to notice. So we got them.
