Rich people who are out of touch

Divorce Summer

My wealthy cousin and wife offered to house sit for me when I was a college student who had three sloppy roommates. They live in a nice house a few towns away with a large front lawn, a tall iron fence and double gates. The gates and fence are 11 feet tall. To open the gate, you need a remote.

The first night, I slept well. I drove to school after having breakfast like a king. After I returned home at five, I made a dinner fit for a King and sat down to write my Econ paper. My cousin has an alarm system that sounds when a driver turns off the road to come up to the gate. You can hear a chime and look at screens to identify the person so you can buzz them into your home.

I was buried in my paper when the chime rang. At first, I was a little confused and checked my phone to see what it was. I could see movement on the screen from my sofa. I got up and moved closer to see two women exiting a white vehicle. One tried to squeeze between two bars of the gate–impossible–and then the other woman tried to boost her over the top of the gate–hilarious.

Even from my house, I could hear the swearing. I was going to press the intercom and ask what their problem was, but I laughed at their antics. For a few minutes, they stared intently at the house from behind the bars. The thinner one stripped to her bra and pants and tried to squeeze back through. No dice. The chest and trunk would not allow that. There was more swearing.

As the smaller one dressed herself again, the larger one returned to her trunk, and took out a tire-iron. I called 9-1-1 as soon as she began to work on the hinges. The women fled because the authorities took too much time. The officers couldn’t read the license plate numbers on the video I showed them. The next week, when my cousin and wife returned to the house, I told them about what had happened. We watched the video. He claimed that he didn’t know who the women were, but his wife was a frightened woman. I left, packed my bags and thanked them all for the “vacation”.

She divorced him the summer before.
