My friend was kidnapped in Cambodia while on vacation. He was in Cambodia for several months, and spent the majority of his time drinking alcohol and visiting clubs. He was a drunk who spent most of his time in clubs and bars. The story ended in a twist.
He was lucky that the person who managed his trust had enough connections to make some important calls. The kidnappers released him when a local dignitary arrived with a personal security force that was essentially an army.
