Know Your Privilege

I will say that the guy was not a jerk. He was fine, but his incredible privilege was both hilarious and jaw-dropping. He was in college and came from an extremely wealthy family. He had never worked before, which is not that unusual for a college student and his age. I was working all through college.

He decided to take a part-time office job to “see what it’s like” because he felt “bored”. We’re chatting a few weeks later, and he starts talking about his job. He pulls out a piece of paper from his pocket, and says “Today I got this.” Was it my paycheck?

What do you mean ‘What do I do with it?’ Deposit it in your bank.” He says, “I don’t know how to make that happen.” “What do you mean by ‘What do i do with it’? Deposit it in your account.” He replies, “I have no idea how to do it. My dad puts money into it. I don’t even look at it. I use ATMs and my credit card to withdraw money.

I was so shocked by what he said that I almost fell off my couch. He asked, “What does it mean to cash it?” It must be nice if they just give him money.
