Cenote Angelita is a huge sinkhole that’s the river’s origin. This river is said to flow 90 feet below the surface. A blanket of hydrogen-sulfide surrounds it, which would kill anyone who tried to inhale it. The noxious cloud contains petrified trees, a skeleton and even a small tree. The ancient Mayans thought the Cenote Angelita to be a portal to Hell.
