Caught Unaware
Tim McGraw was not raised with the last name of his father. McGraw didn’t realize until he turned 11 that Horace Smith was not his biological father. His mother had never told him and he took the name ‘Smith’. He was shocked to find his birth certificate and knew that he needed to know the legacy he would carry with him throughout his life. This included his marriage to Faith.
In Denial
Tim will never forget his first encounter with Tug McGraw. The pitcher was well-known, having played in the New York Mets organization for many years, including 1969, when the Mets won their World Series. Tug McGraw, on the other hand, refused to accept that Tim was his child after they were introduced. Tug didn’t realize how similar Tim looked to him at 18 years old until he was almost 18.
